Going paleo may seem like a sentence for house arrest, especially during the Whole30 when what you can and can’t eat is pretty strict. But it doesn’t have to be, you can be compliant even when you’re out and about.
Here are a few easy ways to stick to it while on the go:
Planning and Preparation
Nine times out of ten you know when you’re going to be out of the house ahead of time so when you’re doing your meal planning and prep take it into account. Pack yourself a lunch you can eat on the go and something you don’t have to heat up – because you wont always have access to a microwave.
Get yourself a small cool bag that will keep your food from getting too hot throughout the day and pack things that won’t be affected by the temperature change. My go to is beef patties, sweet potatoes and veggies like tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers or broccolini.
Always Pack Snacks
Maybe you get stuck in traffic, maybe you’re running late, maybe, maybe.
Lots of things can happen that you don’t expect and if you’re stressed, lost or just peckish the worst thing you can do is not have anything paleo friendly to nibble on!
- Nuts (almonds, walnuts or cashews)
- Jerky or biltong – make sure you check the ingredients for soy sauce and sugar
- Baby carrots
- Trail mix – here is a great recipe from Cotter Crunch
- Energy balls – like these from The Healthful Ideas
Stay Hydrated
Most of the time when we think we are hungry it is actually because we are thirsty…go figure. So if it isn’t meal time try having some water – add chia seeds for extra health benefits and filling capabilities – and wait 20 minutes; if you are still hungry, eat.
Petrol Station Eats
If you find yourself out in the wild and without the correct provisions then you are going to have to hunt through store shelves to find what you need. I have found that in Dubai some great places to find paleo friendly eats are:
- Park ‘n’ Shop – their freshly cooked chicken which you normally find by the ready meals (ie. sandwiches, etc) are great as are the rotisserie chickens. They also have a great choice of pre-cut fruit and veggies on offer. If you scour the aisles there are often paleo friendly brands, most often cereals or protein bar type things.
- Zoom – yes, the petrol station shop has been my saviour on more than one occasion. They have a variety of paleo friendly bars for a quick grab and go option and plenty of fruit and veggies to choose from.
- Muncherie – These products are available in Spinneys, Ripe and online and they are the perfect snack for the peckish paleo.
Browse the Menu Ahead of Time
If you’re going out to eat or you’re planning on being out around meal time then check the restaurants out before you go. Use apps like Zomato to read through the menus and figure out what you can eat – chances are you’re going to have to make a lot of changes to the dishes (yes you will have to be that person a lot of the time).

Oh my goodness thanks for posting this. I did paelo a few yeaers ago and found it so hard to do on the road. Now I travel full time and I don’t have access to fresh fruits and veggies all the time. These are some great tips though.

I think you can cater for any diet as long as you plan ahead like you say, I think its harder when you leave without food and then find no where to purchase the right kinds of food.

Thank you for these tips. I am not on any special diet but these tips would work for anyone! I like the tip of adding chia seeds to your drinking water to make you feel fuller longer. I’m definitely trying that.

I’ve never tried paleo before but I’ve heard so many good things about. Regardless of the diet though, it’s really important that you do your research especially if you’re going to travel to a different country. These are amazing tips!

I know that a lot of people are doing Paleo right now. I imagine that you would have to pack things in lunches or snacks before going out because it’s still not served in restaurants much.

It will be interesting to see how I survive when I go to Africa in December with all my food allergies/intolerances. I live a paleo lifestyle (more restrictive)… We shall see if there really is anything for me to eat, LOL!

I have never followed Paleo diet but I always make sure to carry some healthy snacks and a bottle of water whenever I’m traveling, even if for a day out to the mall.
