Tucked away in a quiet corner of The Greens is Arrows and Sparrows, the latest offering from Davron Hamidov and Zee Alikhonov, two of the tree co-founders of Friends Avenue Cafe. These young and inspired restauranteurs have created a comfortable and homely yet stylish escape from the hustle and bustle of the city that fits perfectly into the neighbourhood.
The internal walls or Arrows and Sparrows are stripped to bare concrete and hints of copper and rose-gold adorn the ceilings and bar while the shelves are filled with kitschy bits and bobs helping it find the sweet spot between rustic and refined. The quirky yet authentic atmosphere is an inspiring backdrop to the fuss free one-page menu packed with exciting, hearty twists on classic dishes.
Our invite for a weekend breakfast adventure began with the beautifully crafted menu of curiously creative and wonderfully delicious options and as we watched dishes fly from the kitchen window we couldn’t help but make our choices by what we saw. There were plates pilled high – the portions are certainly on the hearty side of things – and each one smelt amazing, the warming scent of freshly brewed coffee and food.
The health conscious breakfast-goers need not fear, the plates may be stacked high but everything is cooked to order, from scratch and with amazing amounts of care and attention to detail; the Mr. Benedict – served with beautifully marinated steak strips, fresh and flavoursome kale and a creamy, moreish holadaise sauce was perfection, my egg was cooked exactly how I liked it and it was delicious. The toast is also wonderful, the slices are the perfect thickness – seriously, order the toast!
Whether it is a laid-back weekend breakfast, an indulgent lunch a or a quick caffeine fix during the afternoon Arrows and Sparrows is set to be the next hipster-esque hotspot to be loved by all.
